The Indiana University School of Medicine consists of 9 campuses throughout Indiana. As of 2019, the school is home to one of the largest allopathic medical programs, training 1,409 M.D. candidates and 158 Ph.D students. The IU School of Medicine campus includes the Indiana University Melvin and Bren Simon Cancer Center which is one of the leading cancer research centers in the United States. Affiliated hospitals include the IU Health University Hospital, Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health, the Richard Roudebush VA Medical Center and the aforementioned cancer center. The School of Medicine offers MD/PhD, MD/JD, MD/MPH and MD/MBA programs.
Curriculum:
In an effort to help medical education more accurately reflect evolving real-world settings, the IU School of Medicine recently updated MD curriculum to better integrate education on current care-delivery models and team-based experiences. The curriculum places a focus on integrating basic science education with clinically relevant material and providing opportunities for students to focus on foundational sciences pertinent to a particular chosen specialty.
Curriculum Highlights:
Scholarly Concentrations – Students have the option to participate in Urban Medicine, Health Care Disparities, Business of Medicine, Public Health, or Genetics in Medicine-related experiences (amongst many others) to augment their core medical school curriculum. Through these experiences, students are exposed to experts and mentors within their respective fields as well as the opportunity to develop valuable skills and complete scholar projects that aid in the development of strong residency applications.
Medical Service Learning – The Service Learning Program at IU are structured learning experiences that engage students, faculty members, and community members in projects aimed at improving community-identified concerns while promoting valuable educational experiences for students. The structured experiences a include an introduction and orientation with a community partner, the service experience itself, and post-experience reflection component.
Global Health Education – IU School of Medicine offers a variety of global-health experiences for interested students. Notably, a group at IU SOM published a study on participants of global health program and found that participants of these sorts of service and learning programs were more likely to pursue careers involving work with underserved communities.
Location – Indiana is a midwestern state in the Great Lakes region. Indianapolis is the largest and most populous city in the state. Indiana has a long-standing history and tradition of auto racing. Indianapolis hosts the famous Indianapolis 500, considered to the “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing”. Professional sports organizations include the Indiana Pacers and the Indianapolis Colts.
